Environmental Consulting Firm Expanding in Southern Indiana

One Southern Indiana officials are pleased to announce Specialty Earth Sciences LLC, an environmental consulting and remediation firm, will expand its headquarters and field operations here creating up to 18 new jobs by 2012. The company was approved for tax abatement at yesterday's New Albany City Council meeting.

The company, whose services include environmental consulting, remediation design and construction, feasibility studies, and pilot testing, will invest more than $840,000 to build and equip a new 8,700 square-foot headquarters building in the city's Grantline Business Park.

"Specialty Earth Sciences is an innovative firm with an eye on the future - and Southern Indiana is a perfect place for a company like this to grow and succeed," said Michael Dalby, president and CEO of One Southern Indiana.

Specialty Earth Sciences currently employs nine associates at offices in New Albany and Franklin, Indiana. The company plans to begin hiring additional field technicians, project managers, and clerical staff in the first quarter of 2009 as it prepares for completion of its new facility in September 2009. The company will consolidate its two existing facilities into a single operation.

"One Southern Indiana has been an invaluable resource for our company during the expansion process. The assistance of this key community partner has been a critical component in the decision to grow our business here in New Albany," said Lindsay Swearingen, president of Specialty Earth Sciences.

Founded in 2003 as a two-person venture, Specialty Earth Sciences is now a state certified Women's Business Enterprise (WBE), which serves local, regional, and national clientele.

Through the assistance of One Southern Indiana, the city of New Albany will provide Specialty Earth Sciences with property tax abatement, which allows the company to garner the benefits of phasing-in its property taxes while simultaneously increasing the city's tax base.

Since its creation in July 2006, One Southern Indiana's economic development efforts have resulted in the creation of more than 4,188 net new jobs in Clark and Floyd Counties. Specialty Earth Sciences represents the organization's 39th successful project location or expansion. Combined, these 39 locations will contribute more than $187.3 million in new initial capital and $149.6 million in new annual payroll to Southern Indiana.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Specialty Earth Sciences up to $140,000 in performance-based tax credits and up to $11,000 in training grants based on the company's job creation plans.

"I am excited and encouraged by Specialty Earth Sciences' decision to consolidate and expand its operation here in New Albany. In today's knowledge-based, global economy, a project such as this is demonstrative of the skill sets and support New Albany can contribute to a company's growth. It's a win-win for commerce and community alike," said New Albany Mayor Doug England.
