Accenture Names Gavin Michael, Global Managing Director, R&D and Alliances

Accenture (NYSE: ACN) has named Gavin Michael to the newly-created position of global managing director, R&D and alliances. In this role, he will reinforce the company’s long-standing commitment to help clients leverage innovative technology solutions and strategic alliances to improve their business and achieve higher performance.

Michael joins Accenture from UK-based Lloyds Banking Group, a financial services company, where he served as IT director for its retail banking business. Prior to Lloyds, he served as head of strategy and architecture at National Australia Bank.

“Our research and development, and strong relationships with alliance partners, are the foundation of Accenture’s technology leadership,” said Don Rippert, Accenture’s chief technology officer. “Now, under the leadership of Gavin, we look forward to breaking new ground as we enhance our relationship with alliance partners while creating innovative solutions based on existing and emerging technologies.”

Michael’s responsibilities will include directing Accenture Technology Labs and overseeing the alliances Accenture maintains with the major technology hardware, software, and services vendors. Accenture Technology Labs, the company’s global research and development organization, includes facilities in Chicago; Sophia Antipolis, France; Bangalore, India; and San Jose, where Michael will be located. Accenture’s more than 150 alliance relationships are central to the company’s technology services strategy.

“On the strength of its labs, alliances, and network of innovation centers, Accenture has a long history of creating fresh approaches to solving business problems,” said Michael. “I look forward to expanding and enhancing our R&D and alliance programs with the goal of generating new, innovative offerings for Accenture clients around the globe.”

Michael, a native of Australia with a doctorate in computer science from The Australian National University, will also lead the Accenture Global CIO Council, a peer-to-peer network of more than 220 client CIOs. He is also responsible for an ongoing research program conducted by Accenture that seeks to identify the characteristics of high performing businesses and organizations. CIO’s from around the world are surveyed as part of the research.

“It’s clear that the men and women of Accenture are innovating every day,” said Michael. “I’m excited about working with them and our alliance partners to drive innovation more rapidly into the marketplace.”
