Deloitte: Top Performing Dealmakers Honoured at 2nd Annual Gala

The second annual Canadian Dealmakers Gala was held this evening, in celebration of the best M&A deals of 2008. Strategists, corporate executives, investment bankers and lawyers in advisory and underwriting roles in M&A were honoured. Founded by Deloitte, Lexpert(R), The Globe and Mail and Thomson Reuters, the awards recognize Canadian companies that have created value through M&A transactions.

The leading Deal Team of the Year award was presented to the TMX Group Inc. for the merger of the TSX Group Inc. and the Montreal Exchange Inc., completed May 1st, 2008.
"This event celebrates the significant value that can be created through M&A and recognizes the best deals of 2008. Every merger, acquisition, joint venture, disposition or strategic alliance has the potential to unlock significant value, but only a few achieve the level of success recognized here," says Charles Knight, Deloitte partner and National M&A Transaction Services leader.

The awards honour Canadian companies and individuals whose transactions have significantly impacted their industry through innovation and growth; establishment of best practices; enhancement of customer needs and products; and creation of value.
The judging panel considered quantitative factors, including value creation, financial soundness and improved industry ranking as well as qualitative factors, including strength of deal thesis, complexity of the deal, pre-integration planning and extent of post-merger integration activities.

"In spite of a quieter M&A year, this year's high-profile transactions continue to represent excellence in deal-making in Canada," says Mr. Knight. "Looking forward, volatile markets will affect the look and feel, as well as the pace and scope of deals as economies adjust to the reality of the day."

The Canadian Dealmakers Gala was attended by over 300 corporate executives, legal professionals and investment bankers. The net proceeds raised from the Gala were donated to Junior Achievement of Canada.

The list of winners is available here.
