2009 Edition of Ernst & Young Tax Guide Now Available Online and in Stores

Hailed by critics as one of the best resources available for taxpayers, the Ernst & Young Tax Guide 2009(C) is now available online and in book stores.

Published for over two decades and useful for do-it-yourself taxpayers and professional preparers, the Ernst & Young Tax Guide 2009 (www.publishnow.net; $18.95, 800 pp.) is two books in one. The first is the 2008 version of the official Internal Revenue Service tax guide, Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax, which contains the IRS' position on many of the questions taxpayers face.

The second portion walks users through the filing process. Included are valuable tools such as the 50 most overlooked deductions, enhanced coverage of the alternative minimum tax (AMT), the 25 most common tax-filing errors and over 1,000 other tax saving tips, comments and explanations. The Guide includes other helpful information such as:

  • Tax Breaks and Deductions: Readers will find a checklist of key tax breaks and deductions at the beginning of the book and a mini-checklist at the beginning of each chapter.
  • Tax Forms: The Ernst & Young Tax Guide 2009 contains 2008 tax forms. Readers will find many of the federal tax forms along with tax rate schedules.
  • Tax Changes: The Guide highlights important changes in U.S. tax law and contains the most up to date information available at the date of publication in order to help individuals, small businesses and families file their taxes accurately.
  • Personalized for Taxpayers: The Guide contains special sections for families, homeowners, investors in stocks and bonds, investors in real estate, self-employed entrepreneurs, business executives, senior citizens, and members of the armed forces. Each Special Contents section contains a listing of the major tax issues for members of that group and indicates where relevant answers for each group can be found in the book.

"Since many life-changing events -- such as marriage, moving, retirement and employment status -- result in some tax impact, the Ernst & Young Tax Guide serves as an excellent year-round reference tool," said Greg Rosica, an Ernst & Young LLP Tax partner and contributing author to the Ernst & Young Tax Guide 2009. "With all the changes occurring during these times, it's important to have a guide that explains the tax impact in clear terms."

An electronic version of the Guide is also available in a fully searchable PDF format and contains more than 1,000 links to make navigating content easier. There are also more than 50 links that will take readers to www.irs.gov, or other referenced Internet sites, while connected to the Internet when viewing the PDF of the Guide.

As part of Ernst & Young's commitment to the environment, the Tax Guide was printed using recycled newsprint and soy-based ink.

"The book is lighter -- and greener -- than last year's edition," said Rosica. "By using recycled newsprint, we've cut the number of trees needed to print the book by half. We've also reduced the weight by 30%, requiring less energy and fewer carbon emissions to ship this year's edition to stores."
