Accenture Delivers Construction Data Management Solution for Saipem

Saipem, one of the world's leading oil and gas engineering and construction contractors, has awarded Accenture ACN +5.11% a contract to deliver a data management solution to support Saipem's onshore projects around the world.

Accenture will design and deliver a customized data management system to help plan, monitor and manage the entire lifecycle of engineering and construction projects in up to 35 countries. The Accenture Engineering, Project and Data Management (EPDM) solution will integrate engineering data, such as design quantities, and project management data, such as scheduling information, enabling Saipem to estimate construction work volumes and requirements, remotely plan on site activities, and track physical progress.

The customized Accenture EPDM solution will automate data-based processes, and support cross-departmental use of data. It utilizes Oracle's Primavera P6 Enterprise Project Portfolio Management (EPPM) solution, running on Oracle Database. The prototype phase will go live in the third quarter of 2011 before being rolled out internationally in support of up to 5,000 construction workers.

"Oil and gas projects are becoming increasingly complex and are located in evermore remote locations and in particular quantities management is one of the most important problems considering the amount of data and their evolution during the project lifecycle," said Marco Montesano, head of Engineering and Construction Management Information Systems, Saipem. Accenture's bespoke solution will help Saipem integrate data between distant locations, helping reduce the cost, risks and time associated with construction projects.

"Our experience in the energy sector has shown that integration and management of data is at the heart of successful engineering and construction projects," said Massimo Pagella, director of Accenture Plant and Automation Solutions. "Data management not only improves performance in construction, but also helps optimize new and existing assets throughout their lifecycle."

The deployment of the Accenture EPDM solution extends Accenture's relationship with Saipem, which started in 1997. Accenture has implemented an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system and collaborated with Saipem on various initiatives including Saipem's Integrated Business Information System model, which has supported the company's core business processes in engineering, procurement and construction.
