Glenn Butler Forms CTO Services As Industry Technology Consultancy

Glenn Butler has formed a new consultancy, CTO Services LLC. A vending technology pioneer, Butler is a cofounder of Streamware Corp. (Norwood, MA) and former chief technology officer of Crane Merchandising Systems (St. Louis, MO, and Williston, SC).

Butler explained that the mission of his new firm is to provide strategic consulting services for technology-driven companies. Drawing on his more than 20 years of experience as a technology innovator, Butler is eager to assist consumer product and other manufacturers to navigate the vending industry's new landscape.

"With CTO Services, I look forward to playing a role in the future of vending technology, advising leading companies on the integration of cloud computing, mobile apps, touchscreens, and mobile-to-mobile solutions into new machines and operational processes," he explained.

Butler is the developer of several groundbreaking solutions that changed the vending business model. At Streamware, he designed VendMax, an enterprise resource planning system for vending. He also created InfoVend, one of the earliest syndicated data analyses and test marketing services for the vending business. He served as president of Cantaloupe Systems (San Francisco) during its critical pre- to post-venture capital growth period, helping the company raise $5 million in investment capital.

Since 2007, Butler was CTO at Crane Merchandising Systems, where he helped to set the company's strategic technology course. He directed Crane's entry into remote machine monitoring with, among other things, the development of a telemetry-based mobile-to-mobile application. Butler also played a key role in developing one of the first vending platforms to integrate high-definition digital media. He exited Crane late last year.

Butler is a longtime member of NAMA's technical standards team, and most recently co-authored the Vending Data Interchange (VDI) standard. Michael L. Kasavana, National Automatic Vending Association Endowed Professor at Michigan State University's School of Hospitality Business (East Lansing, MI), said Butler's work continues to have a profound influence on vending technology.
