Two new ambulatory surgical centers under construction in Northern New Jersey will streamline and improve the quality of care for patients through a partnership with Health Informatics Consulting, a leader in healthcare technology.
The Belle Mead-based firm was selected to oversee all aspects of practice management and electronic health record systems at Harrison Endo Surgical Center in Harrison and at Morris County Surgical Center in Parsippany. Initiatives include evaluating and selecting EHR software vendors, managing installation, developing workflow processes, and training staff.
The Obama administration has promoted EHR as a critical tool for improving the quality of care for patients and streamlining the healthcare industry. At the same time, the number of ambulatory surgery centers in New Jersey and across the nation continues to grow, with more and more procedures once performed only in hospitals now performed in these freestanding facilities.
As healthcare reform moves forward, these facilities look to play an increasing role in offering a less costly yet clinically appropriate setting for care.
Stevie Davidson, president and CEO of Health Informatics Consulting, said EHR systems are critical for surgery centers in the changing healthcare marketplace.
"Surgery centers are realizing that they need to move forward with EHR, and that this is where healthcare is headed from a quality, regulatory and business standpoint," Davidson said.
Davidson said the EHR system for a surgery center can be nearly as complex as that of a hospital, with multiple specialties and specialists, multiple interfaces with labs and high-tech medical equipment, and intricate billing and scheduling demands.
Located at 3695 Hill Rd. in Parsippany, the 12,000-square-foot Morris County Surgical Center expects to see approximately 4,000 patients annually and offer services that include gastroenterology, pain management, general surgery, gynecology, urology and otolaryngology.
The Harrison Endo Surgical Center now under construction at 620 Essex St. in Harrison, is a 9,500 square foot multi-specialty ambulatory center that also anticipates a patient volume of approximately 4,000 per year. The center will provide gastroenterology, pain management, general surgery procedures and otolaryngology.
Both facilities are scheduled to open in November under the management of AMCOR Ambulatory Management Corp., of Wayne, NJ.
Davidson is a national expert in the field of health information technology. In addition to being president and CEO of Health Informatics Consulting, she was appointed by New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine to the state Health Information Technology Commission, a body that is working to encourage adoption of EHR by the state's doctors. She serves as chairperson of the commission's Implementation Subcommittee.
