The University of California, Irvine Extension offers for the first time a certificate program in independent educational consulting, designed to address the growing field of educational advising. With input from the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA), the new program will launch during the winter quarter of 2010 and will equip participants with the skills needed to build a successful business as independent entrepreneurs in the field of college admissions consulting.
“With the growing need for personalized, one-on-one consulting, UC Irvine Extension is pleased to launch this new program which will help professionals looking to jump start an independent educational advising business,” said Angela Jeantet, director for education programs for UC Irvine Extension. “Independent educational consultants can advise students on an individual basis, allowing students to find a college that best meets his or her needs and interests.”
The Independent Educational Consultant Certificate Program is designed primarily for individuals interested in transitioning into college admissions consulting; individuals just launching a private consulting firm; and those who are established consultants seeking professional development. The new educational course focuses on entrepreneurial skills, as well as advising, marketing, small business ethics and industry practices.
Courses offered to satisfy the certificate program include:
● “Principles of Educational Consulting” – Offered fall quarter beginning Sept. 28 online.
● “Navigating the Financial Aid Network”
● “Working with Students with Learning Differences”
● “Developing an Independent Educational Consulting Business”
● “Independent Educational Consulting Practicum”
● “College Admissions Consulting Resources” (elective)
● “Marketing and Public Relations for the Educational Consultant” (elective)
● “Consulting Students with Special Interests” (elective)
● “Consulting Transfer, Summer and Gap Year Students” (elective)
“The significance of this new program is that it marks for the first time that the profession of educational consulting has been recognized as distinct and separate from certificate programs in college counseling,” said IECA Executive Director Mark Sklarow. “UC Irvine Extension’s Certificate Program in Independent Educational Consulting will help guide entrepreneurs into a much needed and highly demanded career field.”
Completion of the UC Irvine Extension Certificate Program in Independent Educational Consulting satisfies the experience requirement for associate membership in IECA.
