K&F Consulting Solves Sharepoint E-Discovery Limitation

K&F Consulting Inc., a leader in providing e-discovery and computer forensic services, has developed a solution to finding and producing Electronically Stored Information (ESI) contained within a Microsoft Sharepoint database that is responsive or relevant to a disputed matter in litigation.

"While Sharepoint incorporates search features to find documents in its database, it lacks the ability to batch export the documents once found," says K&F Founder Gregory Fordham. This limitation is significant and will become apparent to organizations that are frequently involved in litigation and must produce large volumes of documents during discovery that are stored in their Sharepoint systems.

While Sharepoint itself, as well as its third party vendors, offers tools for extracting documents from its database, none of them are well suited to the unique requirements of e-discovery. One problem is that the document extraction methods either extract the entire database or only single documents in the database. There is nothing for extracting a collection of documents related to a particular search result.

Solving the problem is not just a document extraction matter, however. The Sharepoint database also contains numerous metadata elements that could also be relevant evidence in a disputed matter. For example, the database can contain document date stamps, path information, owner information, and previous document versions to name a few.

The metadata element issue further illustrates that while the normal third party technology vendors could solve the batch extraction limitation, would they know to solve the other issues that are unique to litigation attorneys? According to Fordham, "Our tools provide the batch extraction mechanism as well as metadata capture and extraction and the keyword and context search capabilities needed by litigators in an e-discovery situation."
