CTPartners Board Consultants Hosts the Seventh Annual Institute on Board and Committee Independence and Effectiveness

CTPartners Board Consultants recently presented "Boards: Weathering the Storm." The timely and impactful conference bought together boardroom and C-suite business leaders, legal experts, institutional investors, and management consultants to brainstorm about state-of-the-art board strategies and best practices that will deliver value now and in the future.

In an era of unprecedented financial challenges, government entities and businesses alike are struggling to find better ways to identify, understand, and manage risks. Boards of directors play an essential role in this process.

This year's conference, the Seventh Annual Institute on Board and Committee Independence and Effectiveness, had a blue-chip list of co-sponsors: TIAA-CREF, NACD, The Conference Board, Business Roundtable, Steven Hall & Partners, KPMG, and Frederic W. Cook & Co., as well as CTPartners. The conference was also a RiskMetrics Group/ISS Governance Services approved accredited director education program.

Roger Kenny, a CTPartners Vice Chairman, noted, "At last year's conference, we came together with a sense of impending financial storm. We've now seen the severity of the financial problems that have confronted companies, business sectors, and nations around the world. Corporations and their directors have found themselves coping with extraordinary challenges. And it's appropriate that we come together again to consider where we are now – and how to help boards most effectively move from this period of crisis to one of opportunity."

The conference presented six groups of internationally prominent panelists who explored such compelling issues as the global effects of the crisis on board governance; the changing role of directors, especially as relates to risk oversight; and a look at what went wrong with executive pay. Panelists also examined the impact of the current financial crisis on the all-important audit committee, likely regulatory shifts, and other changes ahead in this time of increasing government intervention in business affairs.

"The buck no longer stops at the CEO's desk. Directors have greater responsibilities than ever," noted acclaimed author and business advisor Ram Charan. “The most successful boards will be those that understand the changing environment and prepare themselves to most effectively respond.”

CTPartners Board Consultants advises corporations and their directors to do just that. The group is led by Roger Kenny, Vice Chairman, and Peter Kindler, a Partner at CTPartners. Together, they have spent more than 20 years assisting corporations, heads of nominating and governance committees, and chief executives in dealing with the often dramatic changes taking place on boards. Mr. Kenny and Mr. Kindler are the architects of Boardroom Consultants, the first firm to specialize in governance consulting and board director recruitment. Earlier this year, they joined CTPartners, the leading performance-driven executive search firm with more than 300 professionals worldwide.
