Impaq Teal Consulting White Paper Highlights Key Role That Lean Six Sigma Programmes Can Play in Helping Government to Reduce Its Annual Spending

IMPAQ TEAL Consulting Ltd has published a new white paper that highlights the key role that Lean Six Sigma programmes can play in helping the Government to reduce its annual spending which currently is running at over £600 billion according to HM Treasury figures.

While acknowledging the importance of public sector efficiency initiatives such as the Gershon Review, IMPAQ TEAL believes that Government departments need to look much more strategically if they are to seriously address the challenge of reducing public sector expenditure and borrowing.

“Our Government is on record as recognising that ‘value for money needs to be at the core of the way in which Government does business’, but high profile initiatives such as Gershon only generated 2004-08 savings of £26.5 billion – equivalent to just 0.66 percent of overall Government spending over the same period,” commented IMPAQ TEAL Consulting Director, Matt Studholme. “That’s why we believe it’s time for Government to examine the application of Lean Management and Lean Six Sigma thinking, that are already acknowledged as proven techniques in helping organisations that are struggling to manage significant fixed costs and declining incomes – precisely the situation the Government now finds itself in.

“Over the past few weeks we’ve seen more and more commentators drawing attention to the widening gap between Government income and spending. The consensus seems to be that families wont want to pay the additional £1,250 each in income tax that’s needed to fund projected budget shortfalls, so inevitably the focus will shift towards public sector spending cuts,” continued Studholme. “Faced with this choice, we’re convinced that more and more Central and Local Government organisations will increasingly see the benefits of applying Lean Six Sigma thinking as they struggle to transform the economics of their service delivery.”

Lean Six Sigma approaches bring powerful methods for quickly combating recessionary pressures, and its application in the service sector and office environment unlocks significant opportunities to reduce costs, remove waste and improve the overall customer experience. It provides a compelling option for consideration, not least because it helps organisations across the public and private sector to achieve cost reductions without sacrificing service quality.
